Las inscripciones de los leones reflejan su reutilización por muchos gobernantes. Originalmente grabado por Amenhotep III, fueron renovados por Tutankamón (1336-1327 aC), junto con una indicación de que eran movidos por su sucesor Ay (1327-1323 aC). En el siglo III aC, el gobernante Meroitic Amanislo trasladó al sur leones a su ciudad de Gebel Barkal y grabó sus nombres en ellos.

6. Los dos leones se hallaron en el yacimiento meroítico de Gebel Barkal, aunque proceden originalmente del Templo de Soleb. Ambos leones estaban situados en calidad de guardianes de las puertas del Templo. Y a diferencia de la postura tradicional del león o de la esfinge, que aparecen con las patas delantertas por delante del cuerpo, éstos leones tienen una representación más naturalista, acostados de lado con las patas delanteras cruzadas.
